There are several others around, apart from the screen capturing built in to MacOS. What I absolutely dislike about Snapz Pro is the fact that, once opened, there is no way to quit it. It stays in the background until I either restart my Mac or terminate it via the Activity Monitor.
Hope I'm not being a party pooper, but I've had Snapz Pro for years on my G5 Dual proc tower, and finally having bitten the bullet and moved over to Intel I went over to Ambrosia to see if I can upgrade.

Also compare the price between the two apps. After upgrading my OS to El Capitain was so happy to see the free update from 2. I give it 4 stars because of the trouble I had and time wasted getting it going, but it's a five star app. Does it really cost 69 dollars? For screenshots? It is built into OS X. This time I got a license expired notice which I had not with the previous version and was able to get the free license upgrade that was offered. I guess the developer woke from his stupor and fixed the problem, or worked around it. Anyway, I'm giving it a 4 star rating based on the capabilities of the app. I might rate it higher, but there are other screen capture utilities that do more, like providing for annotation of screen shots, and cost less. However, while SnapzPro was not working for me I was reluctant to pay for another screen capture utility and made do with the built-in capabilities in OS X.
I upgraded my Snapz Pro to version 2 but now, when I attempt to run it it keeps saying that I can only run it 'one at a time'. I can find no other Snapz Pro running, I have removed and reloaded it - but the result is still the same. Snapz has been my go-to screenshot app since v1. I'm very happy to see this update.

I wrote back to Bernard giving my feedback with the Beta after a couple of months, wondering if, perhaps, a more recent Beta version was ready that I could try. I did not ever get a response. But it is from a different era: - Apple used to care about developers, and would respond to concerns about changes to system software that affected third parties. My bet is that they changed some internal machinery that makes it incredibly difficult for a "weird" app like Snapz Pro to do its job.
I am no longer directly in that world, but everything I've heard is that a complaint by Andrew or any small-ish developer would fall on completely deaf ears.
Snapz Pro is just not on Apple's radar screen. The fact that it's used by tens of thousands of loyal Apple customers doesn't seem to matter. When was the last time you paid them any money for an update? I can't remember, but I bet it has been years since I did.
It doesn't make sense for a developer to keep enhancing a product if there's no revenue behind it. I'm still on I will continue to use Snapz Pro for screen shots. I regret that I will need to seek some other tool for screen movies that have sound. And it doesn't make sense to purchase it new - look elsewhere.

My first paid license for Snapz Pro was in late Since then there was only one feature upgrade, when Ambrosia added the ability to capture a video of the screen. Snapz Pro was once ubiquitous on the Mac. No longer. Development has lagged badly. Still, Snapz Pro did what I needed in a screen capture utility and I had no reason to look for an alternative. Sadly, that's no longer the case. I recently had a serious system failure and had to restore from a Time Machine backup. Snapz Pro broke and no longer recognizes any of my legitimate serial numbers - even after uninstalling it as completely as possible with CleanApp and reinstalling the latest version.
When I e-mailed Ambrosia about the problem all they did was send me the serial numbers I already have that don't work - nothing that even looks like anyone actually read my problem report. I had other software that lost track of my licenses but they accepted the codes when I re-entered them. Not Snapz Pro. Given that Ambrosia Software in effectively non-responsive to requests for help and that Development has obviously ceased, I'm certainly not inclined to buy a new license for Snapz Pro - given the risk that it might not work either.
I well reluctantly have to choose another screen capture utility - or stick with OS X's built in options. Maybe I'll add Grab to my log-in items - though even then it won't work in the background the way Snapz Pro did and the way OS X's built-in screen capture utility does.
It would be interesting to know the real reasons behind Ambrosia's decline. It certainly isn't the first fine software product to fail. No doubt it won't be the last. Penguirl Mar 7 Martinbriley Feb 12 It used to be pretty decent, but now appears not to work under Yosemite nothing happens if you launch the app from its icon, so you can't see or set the hotkey, and there are no obvious console messages.
Ambrosia has always offended customers, however, by issuing licenses that expire without prior notifcation. And yet every time I install it after a system wipe, I find that the license has "expired" and the app has to retrieve a new one. Of course, eventually, the company will go out of business and you're screwed.
I told them years ago that this was unacceptable, but they've continued sell a product that only works temporarily and now, apparently, not at all. Zivko Feb 7 Don't buy this. I've had this software break multiple times in the last few years, whether it's new hardware or new software.

Alas, I'm beginning to think it's finally reached end-of-life status. I notified Ambrosia that SnapzPro X was not working in Yosemite on the first day the Yosemite public beta became available.
Since then, they have said they are working on a fix, but have no ETA. It's now been a good six months and I despair of ever seeing a working version in Yosemite. Such a shame Report Software.
